Uses and Benefits Of a Boom Barrier

If you have ever driven through a toll booth or checkpoint, you have probably passed through a Boom Barrier. This kind of automatic barrier is the usual method for controlling the flow of traffic into a restricted area. To understand these traffic barriers better, let’s take a look at their nature, functions and typical usage.

What Is a Boom Barrier?

Boom gates, also known as automatic rising arm barriers, are one of the most simple yet effective varieties of automated barriers. A boom gate consists of a long arm that lowers automatically to block the path of oncoming vehicles.

To raise the arm, drivers must present a pass, enter a code, pay a toll, or wait until the system recognizes that it is safe for them to proceed. Typically, an electric motor raises and lowers the arm, while a sensor or security access system controls the operation of the motor.

Where Are Automatic Barriers Used?

Automatic barriers have many applications. For example, they are often found at parking facilities where drivers must pay a fee to park their car. When drivers want to leave the car park, they must present a receipt showing proof of payment to get the barrier to rise.
Other applications of boom gates include toll booths, where drivers must pay the toll before the barrier will rise to let them through.
Automatic barriers are also in place at many checkpoints and at the entrances of restricted areas. Here, drivers may have to show ID, tap an access fob against a sensing plate, or swipe an access card to be allowed entry.

Finally, boom barriers can be used for traffic calming. They prevent through traffic from accessing certain streets, while allowing authorized vehicles, such as buses and emergency vehicles, to pass through. This means that emergency services can use shorter and more direct routes to reach people in need, while other drivers are forced to take other routes to reduce traffic in the restricted streets.

Benefits of Automatic Barriers and Boom Gates :

Boom gates are a very simple form of automated barrier. With only a few moving parts, they are usually reliable, as well as being easy to install and maintain. These benefits may help to explain why boom barriers are such a common feature of the modern world.

Typically the tip of a boom gate rises in a vertical arc to a near vertical position. Boom gates are often counterweighted, so the pole is easily tipped. Boom gates are often paired either end to end, or offset appropriately to block traffic in both directions.

There are various technologies for an automatic boom barrier. One of them is electro-mechanical, which is widely used due to its reliability. The other technologies are often manufacturer specific. Heavy traffic was witnessed at the Kherki Daula toll plaza on Tuesday. There were long lines of vehicles at the toll booths. However, a major traffic jam was prevented due to the timely intervention of the Gurgaon police, who lifted the boom barriers of the toll plaza and let vehicles pass without paying the toll.
Officials at the toll plaza said that while the traffic flow was smooth during the peak hours, the pressure was surprisingly higher after 10am, on the Jaipur side, which led to snarls.
However, the use of central lanes, which are generally reserved only for VIP movement, helped ease the situation to an extent. Officials said that the traffic congestion was witnessed till 2pm.
“The boom barriers were lifted every half hour to ensure that there is no traffic jam at the toll plaza,” an official at the toll plaza said. He said that periodical removal of the boom barriers helped keep the situation in check.
Officials of the concessionaire said that the jams were still taking place as a large number of commuters were still paying the toll with the scrapped ₹500 note, which was causing a delay as it takes time for toll employees to return change for higher denominations.
“Around 430 commuters offered to pay the toll in scrapped notes, while 590 presented the ₹2,000 note, which has become a major problem for us as it is time-consuming to return change,” P Raju, an official with the Millennium City Expressway Pvt Limited (MCEPL), the concessionaire, said.
He said that despite strong efforts, digital payment was not picking up.
The number e-transactions reported at the plaza from 8am to 4pm was 936, which is almost the same as Monday’s, which is 945. The toll collected on Tuesday till 4pm was around ₹26 lakh and 42,311 vehicles had passed the toll plaza, officials said.
The highway authorities also appreciated the support of Gurgaon police and administration to manage the toll plaza.
“We are ensuring that the concessionaire receives more than ₹5 lakh in smaller denominations every day. The Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway runs through the heart of the city and it is important that traffic moves smoothly. We are providing full police and administrative support to handle any situation,” TL Satyaprakash, Gurgaon deputy commissioner, said.

boom barriers causing huge losses to operator, concessionaire

Every time the traffic stretches beyond 500 meters at the toll plaza, the police lift the boom barriers to facilitate free passage and thereby reduce congestion
With the Haryana government pushing to get the Kherki Daula toll shifted or removed, tension has escalated among stakeholders and service providers.
Since last November, the concessionaire and operator suffered huge losses as the police lifted boom barriers time and again to reduce congestion.

Every time the traffic stretches beyond 500 metres at the toll plaza, the police lift the boom barriers to facilitate free passage and thereby reduce congestion.
Nearly 1.25 lakh vehicles pass through the Kherki Daula toll plaza every day and, of these, 80,000 vehicles stop and pay the toll. The toll plaza collects an average of Rs 40 lakh to Rs 45 lakh daily, depending on the traffic volume.
Until last November, highway operator Skylark had to pay an average of Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4 lakh as penalty to concessionaire MCEPL for the time the boom barriers stayed up allowing free passage.

Since then, the police have been strictly enforcing the ‘no congestion beyond 500 metres’ rule and have been lifting boom barriers more frequently to ease traffic.
The result has been that the operator ended up paying nearly Rs 45 lakh to Rs 48 lakh per month as penalty.

This has led to a lot of bad blood between the concessionaire and the highway operator Skylark. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is also not satisfied with the situation and it recently issued notices to improve operations.
The issue of heavy penalties and frequent jams during peak hours has created a tension among the operator, concessionaire and the highways authority. The pressure from Haryana government to shift the toll has further added to the discontent, an official said.

MCEPL said it has made adequate arrangements for increasing toll booths, providing electronic payments modes, RFID tags and similar facilities. However, operator Skylark insists that resources employed in managing the toll plaza are inadequate as per lane traffic movement.

The operator is also miffed by the fact that the number of toll plaza employees has not been increased substantially and the toll rates have not been hiked.

S Raghuramn, CEO, MCEPL, said the maintenance of 8km of the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway at Signature Tower, Iffco Chowk and Rajiv Chowk has been given to Gawar Constructions but still full payments are being made to the operator.
“Efforts are being made to streamline the traffic and such issues crop up, but these are being resolved,” he said.
